Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters on Blu-ray.

Do-dee-do-doo-duh.

Okay, that was bad, but forgive me if I do a mental sci-fi geek happy dance over my Blu-ray bargain of the week: Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition.

Holy crap! All three cuts of the movie — the original theatrical release (1977), the special edition (1980), and the director’s cut (1998) — in a box set for under $20! If that’s not a bargain, I don’t know what is.

Honestly, this is a film that still leaves me awestruck every time I watch it. It’s an wonder-inspiring and compelling work that has held up very well over time — especially John Williams’ score, which is worth the price of this purchase alone — and gains a new, very vibrant life in Blu-ray high-def.

All that said, I have never owned a copy of Close Encounters until I purchased it on Blu-ray and I can say, without a doubt, it was money well spent.

Do-dee-do-doo-duh.
