Happy Austin Day!

One year ago today, my younger sister and I bid farewell to Arkansas and moved to the capital of the Great State of Texas, Austin.

It was a great move for us on numerous fronts, and we’re enjoying living here very much. There’s so much to see and do, and loads of other things to see and do within driving distance.

Texas is a great place to live, filled with opportunities and a lot of polite, down-to-earth folks. And let’s not forget the friendly drivers.

I am looking forward to our second year and many others here!

Kushiel's Legacy
Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series is among my favorite of all time. A brilliantly written, sweeping adventure told in two trilogies that meld the worlds of power, politics and religion in a story that is, ultimately, about love, in all its carnations - from the brotherly to the familial to the carnal to the divine.

Not for everyone, but it holds a place at the top of my "will-read-again" list -- especially the first three books.

Dune Chronicles
Frank Herbert (1920-1986) arguably wrote the definitive science fiction series with his Dune Chronicles. They are a masterpiece of imagination and ones I re-read at least once every year or so.

There has also been a series of Dune prequels written by Herbert's son, Brian, and Kevin J. Anderson, and while decent enough books, they don't hold a candle to the originals. Frank Herbert's voice is too distinct and is sorely missed in those books and the final (Dune 7) of the original book series, which was written from Frank's notes and published in two volumes - Hunters of Dune & Sandworms of Dune.

Tairen Soul Series
Despite what you might think, I'm not a huge fan of fantasy books -- most are pedestrian at best with the obvious standouts like The Lord of the Rings -- but this series is one that took me by surprise. I actually decided to try it because something about the cover art just made it look so damned intriguing, on top of the cover notes. Needless to say, since it's here, I am loving it. Don't be surprised, but you will usually find this series in the romance section of the bookstore because it has a heavy element of that, but the world C.L. Wilson creates is amazingly vivid and wonderfully magical.
